• Question: how are hail stones created?

      Hail stones are a form of solid rain. They are lumps of ice that can be between 0.5cm and 20cm across! They are formed as water is drawn up through thunderstorms into air that is below freezing. As the water rises, it cools and freezes and begins to fall. If there is enough wind in the storm, this may happen several times and the hail stone will grow in layers like a pearl.

      The idea of a 20 cm hailstone (see Kirsty’s answer) is pretty scary..!

      Luckily for me I don’t think I’ve ever been hit by one bigger than a centimetre..
