Hail stones are a form of solid rain. They are lumps of ice that can be between 0.5cm and 20cm across! They are formed as water is drawn up through thunderstorms into air that is below freezing. As the water rises, it cools and freezes and begins to fall. If there is enough wind in the storm, this may happen several times and the hail stone will grow in layers like a pearl.
You are welcome! We don’t tend to see that many thunderstorms here in the UK, but in the US they can definitely get that big. They are big enough to break car windows and heavily damage crops.
