I once won a science prize at school – does that count?

The main thing most scientists can ‘win’ are grants, either big research grants to fund the work (can be up to hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of pounds) or Fellowships to pay your salary or part of it, or smaller grants. sometimes just a few hundred pounds, to visit other labs or to go to conferences. I’ve had quite a lot of grants over the years, of all types, but the same is true for most scientists who run their own lab.

Prizes are a lot rarer. Apart from the school one, I think I won one at University, but nothing since. But I’m a fair few years off retirement, so there’s still time…!

I showed a poster at a scientific conference and got picked to present my PhD research as part of the Society for General Microbiology’s Young Microbiologist of the Year competition. I came 3rd, won £100 and bought myself an iPod.
