Clouds are formed of water vapour. When this water vapour cools to a certain point, it begins to crystallise. As it crystallises it forms beautiful symmetric shapes. These ice crystals eventually grow to such a size that they fall under their own weight. They then fall as snow. It can occasionally be too cold for snow, which is why in winter I look out for days when the thermometer is hovering about 0 degrees centigrade and there are plenty of clouds.
