The oldest form of art in England can be traced back 4600 years to the Neolithic period. These art works include large stone works such as Stonehenge. Later, people learned to work with metals such as bronze and gold, and used these to create decorative works of art such as jewellery for body adornment. They were often placed in burial or sacrificial pits, and this is where they are mostly recovered today. Later periods also used wood and stone, although wood pieces are incredibly rare.
