I love my work and have no regrets about doing it. Despite that, when it is 2am in the morning and I am STILL waiting for bacterial cultures to grow, I do occasionally have second thoughts! My other half usually pops in with a pizza and a DVD to keep me company though. The highs definitely outweigh the lows for me.

As Kirsty said, there have been moments (usually late-night ones) when you wonder if the experiment is really worth the sacrifice of personal time, memorably during my PhD I used to finish my experiments for 9pm so that I could go dancing afterwards, but the finished work makes up for a lot. That said, now I have a family I can’t stay in the lab til silly-o’clock any more, so I have to plan my time and experiments much more carefully so that I can fit them into my working day. I love the variety of what I do, and enjoy the fact that I get to work with lots of interesting people from different places.
